Our local karter, Dominic Ang has made Malaysia proud by winning the MMER 12 hour race last midnite, together with senior team mates Taniguchi and Kataoka. CITY KARTING

takes over

SEPANG INTERNATIONAL KART CIRCUIT!!

It was perhaps the worst kept secret in the industry but its now safe to announce that we have taken over the running of the Sepang International Kart Circuit which means all fun & rental karting operations will be under our care.

Private kart practises can be held too including any corporate events plus other races as well, just as how we ran the Shah Alam Stadium Circuit. Night karting are run here too...so its even better than Shah Alam plus the track is world class!

We would like to thank Sepang International Circuit ( SIC ) for the opportunity to run the circuit and bring the track back to its glory days. ( its starts with running it back in the direction it was designed for - clockwise! )

See you trackside - Sepang!

Kart Racing Returns to SHAH ALAM STADIUM KART CIRCUIT!

Come next weekend, 23 - 24 April - the shriek of kart racing engines in anger will be heard again along the 2 straights of Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit. This comes with the hosting of the Round 2 of the All Stars Karting Championship.

The last time such racing action was seen here was sometime in 2005, when the AKOC was hosted here and the webmaster, yours truly - was competing as well.

The track was recently inspected and the organiser are putting the finishing touches to bring back the glory of kart racing to where our nation's kart racing really started, which was during the 1999 - 2000 season......( the above picture was in year 2000 Rd 4, at Shah Alam )

For our racers - have a good race and a safe one too! Happy Hunting!

VETTEL win Monaco!!

The 2011 Formula 1 season is looking to be a tad boring after Sebastian Vettel scored his 5th victory out of 6 races for the year.

Sebastian is surely talented but also lucky when you watch the last 2 races where he was hunted down right to the line by Hamilton in the previous GP and Alonso in the Monaco GP. Naturally, some would claim that it was down to right team strategy.

Anyhow, its a long season still ahead and for the sake of Formula 1 fans worldwide, let's hope some other drivers get to share to stand on the top podium too.

It's the time of the year again where our Sepang F1 Circuit  gets to play hosts again to the Formula 1 Championship, making it the 2nd round race weekend for 2011.

More importantly for Malaysia, other than our Malaysian backed Team Lotus and also the Mercedes Team in the F1 category - is the running of the support races, particularly the Formula Pacific ( BMW ) races, where we will see our young Malaysian drivers battling it out on track under the glare of the world media and F1 bosses.

To all the racers, Godspeed and may all the races ( including the F1 too ) be an interesting but safe one too!

Sebastian Vettel - World Champion 2010

Giving u the finger!

The 2010 Formula 1 season concluded at the Yas Marina Circuit this evening, ending a thrilling driver's championship battle which could have gone 4 ways - making this the most exciting Formula 1 Championship to date.

Sebastian Vettel, helped by his superior qualifying effort yesterday is crowned the race winner and also World Champion for 2010, earning him also the title of being the youngest F1 Champion at just 23 years old.

For those who did not know - Vettel started racing in karts, just 15 years ago while he was 8 years old.....

The 2010 Constructor's Championship which was sealed in Brazil went to Red Bull Racing - a team which created controversy over their no team orders stand throutout the entire season.

Their call proved to be correct all this while and was clearly demonstrated at the Abu Dhabi F1 race. If Vettel were instructed to back off to "help" Webber - they could have easily lost the Driver's Championship and created many unhappiness within the team thereafter.

So many Red Bull do know about their racing.....and their energy drinks!

CITY KARTING....advertised at 35,000ft!

(click on above for a larger and legible copy )

It was a routine flight for me and reading the inflight magazine is a ritual I do, especially when it is a new edition. The MAS "Going Places" October 2009 edition was like others...entertaining, informative and colourful.

The feature was about Malaysia and smack right on page 20 was about....CITY KARTING. So its true, we are even advertised at the skies above us and the best part it's complimentary of MAS.

Terima Kasih and Thank you!

Langkawi, here we come!

Morac International Kart Circuit ( MIKC ), the top class international karting circuit in Malaysia is now under the management of City Karting!

MIKC had in the past hosted 2 Rotax World Finals before, which proves its track, facility and location as top rate!

City Karting is proud to be be managing this facility on behalf of its owner, Mofaz and we both hope to restore the glory the track had in the past!

Furious Racing in the old layout.

A paradise for karters...nice track, excellent beaches and easy access.....

Vettel wins Malaysian F1 2010 !

The Red Bull F1 Team made a 1-2 sweep of the podium with Vettel taking the top spot while team mate and pole sitter, Mark Webber had to settle for 2nd spot. The race was certainly not boring as there were plenty of cars failing to reach the finishing line, including the Ferrari of Alonso which failed spectacularly just 2 laps from home!

On a more relevant formula to our nation, the support race of the Formula BMW Asia Pacific Championships also hosted its 1st 2 rounds this weekend. On the grid this year, saw many karters graduating up to this formula which included our own Chang Mun Shien and others like Nabil Jeffri and Afiq Yazid - all three will be contenting for the Rookie Cup this year.

All the very best to our young F1 hopefuls!

Alonso draws first blood at Bahrain GP, 2010!

The season which promises to be the most exciting - with 4 World Champions starting on the grid but the 1st race of the year in Bahrain received mixed reactions. The lack in re-fuelling somehow made it seem less exciting and then  there were the impressions that some drivers were driving with economy in mind too....

In any case, luck played its hand where Vettel was the loser and Alonso, ever the opportunist was there when it matters and crossed the finishing line - FIRST.

Will Melbourne be more exciting? We will see!

Schumacher confirms his 2010 F1 return with Mercedes GP Petronas!

Just before Christmas - we got the biggest news in F1 as a Xmas present where Michael Schumacher has confirmed driving for the Mercedes GP Petronas F1 team.

Schumacher’s return to racing with Mercedes GP Petronas sees his return to Mercedes-Benz Motorsport where he began his racing apprenticeship as part of the Junior Program in 1990, racing in Group C sports cars and DTM. It also sees him renew his partnership with Ross Brawn with whom he won all seven of his World Championships. Schumacher will join his compatriot, 24 year old Nico Rosberg, in the Silver Arrows cars.

Michael Schumacher: "Mercedes GP Petronas represents a new challenge for me both in a sporting and a personal context. It is a new chapter in my racing career and I am really looking forward to working with my old friend Ross Brawn and my companions from my days with the Mercedes Junior Program. I am convinced that together we will be involved in the fight for the Formula 1 World Championship next year and I am already looking forward to getting back onto the race track. For me, this partnership closes the circle. Mercedes supported me for so many years when I began my Formula 1 career and now I can hopefully give something back to the brand with the star."

So now that's part of the musical chair is settled, I am sure many Ferrari fans will also soon switch camps to the Silver Arrows team......and the question is - will you be one of them?

Let the F1 Racing begin!

ALL the Best to the MALAYSIAN TEAM at the GRAND FINALS!

This week is the hosting of the Grand Finals where the best Rotax Max drivers from each country will compete to crown the champion of all champions.

Malaysia too has sent a contingent of drivers, one of them are own Gilbert Ang & City Karting would like to wish them all the very best and safe racing!

For a complete official coverage of the race, please check the official website HERE! It carries daily pictures and even life video streaming!

Congrats to Jenson Button!

F1 World Champion 2009

And now he wun drive!

This is becoming like a musical chair and the latest we hear is Herr Schumacher's neck has turned jello ( courtesy of a bike crash ) and he wun be fit enough to replace Massa after all.

Oh well, speedy recovery to him and Massa too!

For latest update, you better read his official forum at www.michaelschumacher.de cos he might just change his mind again!

No prizes for guessing who is this driver!

Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world champion, shocked everyone including his own manager Willi Weber by coming out of retirement to be Felipe Massa's replacement at Ferrari, from the European Grand Prix. So what's  the best way to get back into shape for F1? Karting, of course and he was seen practicing hard at the South Grada Karting Track in Lonato, Italy.

Well, there are mixed feeling about his return to F1 and let's hope he will first prove to his manager Willi Weber that he is still worth many millions Euros!

Citykarting.com is NINE years old.....yes, true and going on strong!

Guess who is this driver!

The above picture is courtesy of Mondial Karting ( a long time reciprocal link partner ) and shows a champion driver trying his skills at karting!

Yes, he is driving an Italian Tonykart but he's a French! For more clues, see his overalls and make a guess.

For the answer and more pictures.....click here! ( yes, its in French but you can surely read his name! )

Once again, thanks to Mondial Karting!

IMPORTANT MAIL FROM ORGANISER, TO ALL RACERS COMPETING AT AMC RD3 / RMC RD 4 INDRAPURA KARTING CIRCUIT

Dear All,

Thanks for your support and the final entry list now stands at 93.

The AAM track inspector was at Pekan on Thursday 16 July to inspect and approve the track layout and conditions. In order to stimulate actual racing conditions and to see how a racing kart would handle at this new circuit, we took a Senior kart and a DD2 for the initial test of the circuit.

The following is a description of the circuit. The Pekan circuit with all the tyre barriers resemble the F1 track at Monaco. The straight will remind you of coming out of the tunnel in Monaco and into waterfront. The micky mouse section will be the casino corner and thereabouts. The straight can be taken at flat out speed but will tighten into a chicane at the end of the straight. While you may still go flat out in a straight line into the chicane, you will find you run of space to turn into the first corner. The back straight is also a flat out run until to brake hard to turn into a fairly easy right corner and then semi-curve left hander and the start of the micky mouse section. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT TYRE BARRIERS ARE ON BOTH SIDE OF THE TRACK WITH ABOUT 1-2 METREs RUN OFF BUT GOING INTO THE BARRIERS AT A SPEED WILL STILL RENDER YOU TO REPLACEMENT OF AXLE OR STEERING COLUMN. BE VERY CAREFUL IN THIS SECTION. The straight and corners are wide enough and have ample space for overtaking.

To improve the safety of this section, we will be lowering down the barriers from 4 tyres to maybe 2 tyres so that the drivers can see what is in front of them and try to avoid any driver who had spun out. This we will only do on thursday after the majority of the drivers have tested and share their views. The track surface has been relaid completely for the whole area and it is good for racing. During the testing, I had no grip due to no rubber on the surface and only in one area it was slightly bumpy. By thursday, it will have too much rubber on it and you will need to change your ratio confiquration.

For the test, the ratio used was 12-82 for a start. Most of you will definitely be driving much faster than this old man. Lap time was average 56-58 secs. The weather for the test on thursday was clear and cloudy. Not much sun. Tyre pressure was normal but setup of the kart was for no rubber. There is one magnetic strip on the circuit so drivers do not need to bring their infra sensor.

Tents will be allotted to you. Please check against your name on the tents. The tents will be assembled only on wednesday in time for the practice on thursday. All drivers are reminded that NO VEHICLES WILL BE ALLOWED to be parked in the paddock area. All car parking will at the car park at the DRB HICOM area designated. Vehicles carrying karts and parts will be given vehicle passes and will be allowed into the paddock ONLY TO LOAD AND UNLOAD. Immediately after that function the vehicle has to leave the area and park near the restaurant which we will inform you at site. Please obey all instructions from the officials otherwise you may not be allowed to race.

Practice on thursday and friday is as per the time schedule given out earlier. Please stick to your classes for the practice. We do not want any incidents of micromax running with the Rotax.

Finally, a reminder that the BBQ party is on Friday 24 July at the track at 7.30pm. All drivers are reminded to be present to meet YMM Tengku Mahkota of Pahang who was a keen karter himself.

See you in Pekan.

Best Regards

Though its not a permanent track, we hope it will be one....just like how our own City Karting track began!

Anyhow, this track together with the recent launch of the Melaka kart track - has made us, Malaysians a lucky to have yet another facility to race on!

All we need now is to find our next Hamiltons, Rosbergs...:)

PLUS RMC 2008 Rd 4

Over the last weekend, the Rd 4 of the PLUS RMC 2008 was run and as usual, the competition was fast & furious especially in the Juniors and Senior classes.

Our Junior drivers represented by Abang Amirrul, Chang Mun Shien, Muhammad Rahami, Gilbert Ang and Brandon Lee had mixed finished although some like Abang Amirrul did well in his pre-finals. Of the 21 starters in the Juniors Final - 8 drivers DNF before the chequered flag, a testament to the intensity of the racing in this class.

In the Seniors, our reign Champion Wan Dassila had an outing he would rather forget as he DNF in the finals leaving our Indian driver Raymond Banajee to take a 11th spot.

In the Masters category - our drivers Ito-san and Nishimura-san came 5th & 6th, achieving a respectable finish at the end.

Well, in the end - racing is about not giving up and let's look ahead to the final 5th round come 9-10th August!

RMC Rd 1 News Flash!!!

Our drivers had a mix day for the 1st round of the Rotax Max Challenge Malaysia 2008 at Sepang recently....

Masdenal Ali finished 2nd in the seniors while team mate Dass scored some points with a 7th....Our Indian Express Rayomond did well with a strong 5th effort.

We fared worse in the Juniors and due to some technical reasons, Rio and Rahami was stripped of their excellent 3rd and 5th places in the finals...

First timers Mun Shien and Abang Amirul had a steep learning and finished at the tail end of the field - but a good effort anyhow!

See the team in action again, in Kota Baharu shortly!!!

Masedenal Ali at the Rotax Max Challenge World Finals!

Our driver, Masdenal together with our other Malaysian team drivers represented our nation  proudly at the recent World Finals at UAE. Everyone in the team found the conditions tough going especially with the longish track and a very competitive field of drivers!

The above is a snap shot of Masdenal leading a pack of drivers!

Anyhow, it was definitely a very good learning experience as always and we are sure, Masdenal will benefit and mature in his racing. Year 2008 will see a more experienced and better prepared Masdenal in his title defense as Malaysia's Max Senior Champion!

The 8th ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS will take place in Al Ain, UAE from 26th November to 1st  December, 2007.

ROK Malaysia 2007 Championship

STOP PRESS!!!! ROK race postponed again!!! NO race on Jun 10th

Racers and supporters alike, please take note! We are informed by the organisers that once again the race is now postponed...to perhaps July. Like you - this is disappointing news especially since the season has even yet to start and this is not doing my race nerves any good since I am to race in the ROK Championship as well.

No reasons given, so I cannot tell you why either!

MALAYSIA TOP TEN FINISHES AT ROK INTERNATIONAL FINAL 2006

Our young Malaysia drivers ; James Veerapen, Ooi Fei Hoong and M Hiqmar Daniel did the nation proud by finishing very well in the recent ROK International Finals 2006 - held recently at the South Garda kart track during 12-15 Oct.

James finished 24th in a super competitive field which saw an entry of 90+ drivers. He had the speed and qualified 6th, not bad for a driver who hope to just qualify for the finals. In the finals of 33 drivers - James consolidated his achievement by a clean good drive.

Fei Hoong and Daniel did one better with a 10th and 8th placing finishes proving that we Malaysian too, can be better than the local racers within such a short time and mind you - all 3 drivers have never driven on European Circuit before this!

For more official info, please visit the Vortex webpage on

Accompanying them are their champion mechanics, Chong Han Boon and Chong Kok Seng - who will also get a chance to work alongside the Tonykart factory teams and view their operations.

Of late, our nation has been hit by dengue fever which resulted in a number of fatalities.

Recognising that whilst tyre barriers have the potential to contain aedes mosquito breeding habitat, it is necessary  for drivers' protection on the circuit. To counter this, City Karting has decided to cover all the exposed tyres barriers for the moment, as seen above. We have also invested in our own fogging machine to fumigate further the track areas.

City Karting cares for the community! Do you? - please eliminate any aedes mosquito breeding grounds!

City Karting is very proud to announce that our young Team Swiss Hutless Malaysia driver, Syafiq Ali finished a very respectable 10th placing in the Junior Max class at the recently held World Finals.

The competition was very tough and the top 20 drivers were all within 1 second from each other in lap times. Our other junior drivers like Ermann & Ross finished 21st & 29th respectively, which is commendable for a world class quality drivers field.

Our senior driver Leo Mahr did not fare too well, after being shunted out twice by other drivers in the early races, hence eliminating Leo from doing well in the subsequent races.

All in all, a good effort by our young drivers and you do us proud!

Montoya on a Shifter Kart

This picture was taken quite some time ago - in fact, just before the Brazilian F1. Montoya was doing some demo for a promo work at a local Brazilian kart track - driving a shifter kart!!

I kept the above picture in anticipation for his possible crowning as the 2003 F1 World Champion but sadly he was not to be...Michael Schumacher went on to create history by clinching his 6th World Title.

Congrats to Michael on well deserved victory, in what was a very tough year for him & Ferrari, but an exciting year for Formula 1!

Roll On F1 2004!

Wai Leong - A True Racer to the end!

Wai Leong Leading Nik Iruwan

Sunday 7th Sept was the last round of the Malaysia Max Challenge and history would have recorded Nik Iruwan as our young man who will represent Malaysia at the 2003 Rotax World Championships in Egypt. Last year's Champ, Muhammad Amir finished 1st with a smart move on the last lap on Wai Leong.

The final race however had also produced another champion - Ng Wai Leong. There was NO DOUBT for everyone who watched that final race, that he is he true champion - Wai Leong had to drive one handed for most of the 25 laps while leading, dicing and protecting his 1st position. Why? His right hand was holding the radiator straight after a securing pin broke early on. ( and he is a right handed guy! )

For those familiar to karting, this feat is "superhuman" under race conditions. Wai Leong simply gritted his teeth and drove on whilst holding his radiator upright at the straights and also down the fastest sweeper on the track - which is bumpy, very fast and slightly wet....

At the last lap, it was at the end of this sweeper where Amir, then Nik Iruwan overtook and took the flag. Wai Leong came in 3rd, maybe 1-2 seconds behind the two front runners.

After the race, everyone congratulated Wai Leong as though he won the race  for his gallant & gutsy effort - there was never a doubt for those who saw him drive that Finals, that he was the true driving champion of the day.

CITY KARTING wins BIG at Max Challenge Rd 2

The picture which appeared in News Straits Times ( Monday 14th July ) says it all.

City Karting posted three winners on the podium in the elite class, the Senior Max Challenge. Wai Leong who had earlier engine troubles, made good in the final race to clinch an easy victory from youngsters Nik Iruwan and Aaron Lim ( on holidays from his European stint ) - both of also City Karting based RL Racing Team.

For the Max Juniors, Syafiq Ali - one of our drivers came also 1st in his finals. To cap the sweet success completely, our young Jazeman Jaafar also triumphed again, beating all other drivers to win his Cadet class.

Congrats to all and yes, with City Karting - we build WINNERS!

 www.citykarting.com turns THREE years old!

Our website has recently turned three in July and is going on strong with your support and encouragement. We are getting a lot of overseas visitors, which is extremely good for our karting  - both in terms of recognition & exposure, and also commercial possibilities.

Due to some changes in the racing scene, coverage of certain racing events have been less than before ( i.e. pictures ) in the last one year - so my sincere apologies if there are shortfalls. On a positive side, we are participating in all Malaysian races this year, hence have decided to give some coverage to them, when possible. Well, we have been winning some of them too, so that's an added encouragement!

Last of all, I do hope you find the site useful/informative and should there be any suggestions, please drop me a note or two.

Last of all, thanks and if you kart - enjoy it and safe racing!

A World Champion karts......even on ice!

The above picture shows Schumacher at play during a 2003 pre-season promotional event in the Alps, held earlier this year. Test driver Luca Badoer follows closely behind...yes in another kart and we do get this close while racing.....by the way, the 2003 CIK bodywork visible here shows what's coming our shores in the future....love it or hate it? You decide!

KBS – AAM MALAYSIAN KARTING CHAMPIONSHIP 2003

After a few hiccups due to unforseen circumstances i.e. SARS, the prestigious KBS-AAM Malaysian Kart Prix Round 1 will kick off next weekend ( 23 - 25th May )

The event will this time be held in Sepang International Go-Kart Circuit, which to many is an excellent track. City Karting though no involved this year in the event organisation, will field a strong team of drivers to continue their dominance in the main classes contested for the year, especially the Cadets, Juniors and Formula 125.

Be there to support the CITY KARTING RACING TEAM! ( and see how exciting karting can be !!! )

STOP PRESS : A 21 years old ex-karter sets POLE position at Malaysian GP 2003!

Less than an hour ago, Fernando Alonso at just 21 years of age, set the fastest qualifying time at Sepang, the track of our Malaysian F1 2003. The Renault driver, was a star kart driver in Europe and test driver for Mike Wilson chassis before moving up the motorsports ladder.

With just 18 F1 starts under his belt, and only 21 years old - he is set for many brilliant performance to come. Coincidentally, Jarno Trulli - yet another ex-karter and team mate to Fernando takes 2nd grid position today as well.

Karting brought this guys up to F1 level, so what are you waiting for? Join karting, the stepping stone to motorsports stardom!

See you at City Karting!

Our Star Karters at the Malaysian Formula 1, 2003!

City Karting is delighted to announce that two of our Star Drivers will be competing in the Formula Malaysia  ( Formula Hayabusa ) event, as part of the support races during the Formula 1 event at our Sepang F1 Circuit.

James Veerapen and Mikko Nassi had been busy testing and practising at the Sepang track recently and are confident that their lap times will drop further during the races itself. James, as featured in last week's CBT ( NST ) is a Formula BMW aspirant and will aim to do well in this event, to hopefully harness some additional sponsors for his assault in the Formula BMW this year.

Mikko Nassi, a locally based Finnish teenager who started his competitive kart racing in Malaysia is dong this one-off  event, as a once in a lifetime racing  experience. Coincidentally, the entry was his father's birthday present - good on you, Ari! No doubt Mikko will ask fellow countryman Kimi for some pointers, so watch out!

Both drivers are extremely good kart drivers; James & Mikko races actively in the our ICA & RotaxMax  championships respectively and will be the ones to watch that weekend! City Karting  wishes both of you well for that weekend!! DO us PROUD!

Happy New Year and may the new year bring you & family, happiness, good health and success off and on track in 2003!

This year will see many changes in the racing calendar of most karters esp. for those who are racing in the KKS Championship since the venue of racing are nation-wide in 2003. On the surface, racing will be more expensive since additional traveling and accommodation will be needed. For some, this could mean better coverage for their sponsors, which is a positive thing - if you are lucky to sponsored!

For karting to grow further in Malaysia, one of the possible steps is to bring the excitement  and action of kart racing to the public in other parts of the country ( like the heydays in the 70s & 80s ) - further promoting the sport . Hopefully, this "road show" will see many more new karters racing in the years to come!

As most tracks on the outstation circuit ( out of Klang Valley ) will be new, some will say that racing is then more even and fair....No doubt, some drivers will moan that it will be more expensive to race - but this also applies to the organisers and club. Bottomline is, enjoy it while you can!

On a slightly different topic, some of our drivers are growing abroad to further their karting. Aaron Lim Say Joon, our 2002 Malaysian National Karting Champion will be in Europe competing in the 2003 European and Italian Masters Championship ( FA Class ) - we wish you the very best and will keep you posted on his progress on this web site! Stay tuned.

Other drivers are also planning to follow Aaron's footsteps but nothing concrete is cast yet, so we should not make any announcement as yet. James Veerapen is also going to a higher plateau of motorsports - he will be testing the Formula BMW soon and is hopeful to do a year in this class. Keep the Malaysian flag high, James!

Let your kart engine rumble in 2003 and have a safe & fun racing year ahead of you! ( for fun karters - safe driving year as well and buy a kart!! )

"WAI LEONG AND PARTNER OUTSHINE FAUZI BROTHERS IN ENDURANCE RACE" - The Star Newsprint Dec 23, 2002

On the Saturday nite 21st Dec - the Sepang International Go-Kart Circuit hosted yet another kart race and this time, the two stroke sound rumbled through the nite continously for 2 hours in the Sepang 125 Night Enduro.

City Karting swept to the winner's position with the driving combo of Ng Wai Leong/Chong Kok Seng ( Tonykart/Sonik/Dunlop ) by completing 121 laps - 4 laps ahead of Raja Razman/Rizman Merican. 3rd placing went to yet another City Karting entry of S.W. Wong/Stanley Cheong - father of our rising cadet karter star;  Calvin Wong.

The race was held in damp conditions after an early evening rain, which made tyre choice a  critical decision. Wai Leong and Kok Seng opted for dry tires which paid handsomely when the track dried permanently in the mid stages. Even the star entry of Fairuz & Farriz Hj Fauzi with the Rotax Max RM1 could not match the pace, eventually DNF after some engine troubles at the 35th lap.

The Sepang International Go-Kart Circuit which City Karting had recently started to manage will host more similar events in the future - adding more excitement to our karting & motorsports scene!!   Stay Tuned!

City Karting Dominates KBS Kart Prix Championship 2002

With the conclusion of final round of the Kementerian Belia & Sukan Kart Prix Championship earlier this month, the Malaysian Kart Champions were also decided.

Drivers from City Karting dominated the season's racing with victories in the Formula 100 class by Aaron Lim, Formula 125 by Leo Mahr and Formula Cadet by Jazeman Firhan Jaafar - all crowned as the 2002 Malaysian Champions in their respective classes. It should also be noted that all the above champions are still in their teens & younger ( Jazeman ), hence is guaranteed to harvest more success in the future! Malaysia's future in international motorsports scene is indeed very bright with such capable hopefuls.

City Karting is proud to have been part of their success for the 2002 season and look forward to more joint victories in the new 2003 season!

For those who want to know more of our young champions, please browse the Star Driver Page for their profiles!

Syabas! & Selamat Hari Raya to our Muslim Karters, Clients & Friends!

Aaron does the World Cup!!

The winner of the last Kart Prix Rd 3., Aaron Lim Say Joon is taking his karting challenge to the World Cup which will be held in Lecce, Italy over the weekend 25 - 27th October 2002.

Whilst Aaron is no stranger to international kart racing in Italy, he has not driven at the La Conca track. Nevertheless, our young man will driving under the PDB Racing Team banner and will benefit from the team's setup experience. Once again Aaron will be using the Gillard/Parilla/Bridgestone combo for this assault. Partnering Aaron in the FA category will be Nick de Bruijn, son of the legendary engine tuner; Peter de Bruijn.

While Aaron is competing in the FA class, the 5th round of the FSA World Championship will be raced on the same weekend, promising excellent exposure & learning experience  for our young Malaysian.

Aaron, City Karting and supporters would like to wish you the very best in all your races!!

As I see it......the KBS Enduro Rd 2

About 2 weeks back, the 2nd Enduro was held where a mix arrays of Formula 125s were driven flat out for 2 hours by approximately 15 teams ( each of 2 drivers ) The event was organised by the club (KKS) to replace the postponed KBS TVR Sports Malaysia Kart Prix Rd 3. The club's effort should be applauded in the interest of karting in our region.

The race was won by the main City Karting team ( Wai Leong & Kok Seng ) using the newly arrived Sonik VX125. This new engine, coupled with sensible race tactics and excellent pit work won the race by 2 laps after the 2 hour period. In 2nd place, were the team of Boon & Tat Loong,  also of City Karting team - who coincidentally were 1st round winners in their IAME Leopard. Azri Md Noor with his partner finished 3rd place close behind.

Like all racing, some teams's outcome  was like an effort to prove that Murphy's Law do exist. Nik Iruwan who shared his driving with a young Thai started their race with battery/ignition difficulties. In the end, he saw his team mate push the kart back twice into the pit - ending a luckless day while shaking his head in disbelief. Dynamic duo of James Verappen and William Woo had their outing cut short by James's  relatively minor passing incident. When posted with a concerned query on the damage, William was too speechless to answer yours truly.

Even the very well prepared Aaron/Mungkong team was not spared of trouble and did not dominate as per the last round. Perhaps endurance racing takes a different driving style and tactics compared to sprint racing, so maybe this is something everyone can improve in future.

On a brighter note, the team of Ari ( Mikko's dad )/Aziz was elated to have finished 8th - with a trouble free run. The youngest team were probably James Baudzus & partner who although finished, were later disqualified for driving longer than the allowed  20 minutes per driver per stint. At least James knew how to smile even when they were disqualified, which in hindsight, is the most important thing to remember, at least in my opinion.

"Karting, like any sport is to be enjoyed while you are doing it......"

Safe Racing!

Oceania Championships 2001

HOW I DID IT! AARON writes......

Aaron Lim Say Joon, one of our top driver has more than an exciting weekend at the Oceania 2001 Championships a few weeks back. Read his post race review below to know how he became the first Malaysian to qualify for his Formula A license.

"Practice - Had some bad luck during practice on Friday as I broke a chassis. But test sessions were good as we were able to improve on our times.

Qualifying - We had 2 qualifying sessions. In the first session, I was in 10th Position and my second session, I improved my time to 8th position.

Heats - I finished the 1st heat in 7th, 2nd heat in 11th & 3rd heat in 7th. We didn't fare quite well in the heats as my engine was overheating due to insufficient water caused by the radiator which was clogged up. We found out about it at the end of Saturday – so our poor performance in the heats was a blessing in disguise afterall!

Prefinal & Final - I started 8th position in the pre-final. At about lap 5, I had a small tangle at the end of the straight and ended up about 12 so had to work quite hard to get up the order. Due to a small collision between the 2 Tony Kart drivers who were in 4th and 5th place, I managed to get to 7th place.

In the final, at the first corner there was a small collision where a few drivers tangled and I took the opportunity to get into 4th place, from 7th. I was fighting for 3rd place with everyone between 3rd place and 6th place drivers at bumper to bumper distance. At one point, the Birel driver ( Michael Patrizi of Australia ) who was in front ( winner of heat 1 ) had brake problems and I got stalled by him. This cost me any chance of making the podium, but nevertheless I still finished 5th.

I have qualified for the Formula A license since the top 5 drivers will be able to obtain the license – which is a bonus for an otherwise exciting weekend! I want to thank my dad, Wai Leong and the team for the good results especially when both Nik Iruwan and myself finished in the top 10!"

Success at the  CIK/FIA Oceania 2001 Championships!!

City Karting RL Racing Team scored double success in Australia, during the Oceania 2001 Championships.  Both drivers; Aaron Lim and Nik Iruwan finished in the top ten position as initially targeted. In fact, Aaron finished 5th and Nik Iruwan a creditable 8th at last weekend's Oceania  Championships.

See the official race results at www.rvengines.com/oceania%20_result.htm

With Aaron's 5th placing in the finals, he has also qualified for his Formula A Racing License from the CIK/FIA - the first Malaysian to do so based solely from his own race achievement & driving ability. This achievement is definitely something all of us Malaysians can be proud of as the license is only obtained when the driver finishes in the top 33% of a CIK/FIA  sanctioned event.

A small write up of Aaron's races during the Oceania 2001 will be posted here soon, so stay tuned...

Karting has certainly come a long way in Malaysia and judging from how our drivers are doing, there will be more good news of them in the international scene.

Congrats! Aaron and Nik Iruwan!

MALAYSIA’S 2001 CIK/FIA Oceania Championships Contenders!!

Malaysia’s flag will be flying high once again at the upcoming CIK/FIA Oceania Championships 2001 with the representation of two Malaysian junior drivers in the Intercontinental A Category. ( ICA )

The competition is once again held at the beautiful kart track of Raleigh International Raceway, located in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales – Australia. The 4 day long event; held on the 8th - 11th November will see many international standard kart drivers competing again, as per last year’s well supported races.

The Malaysian Team

For this year, a two man strong driver’s team with Aaron Lim Say Joon and Nik Iruwan Nik Izani will spearhead the Malaysian effort – both at only 16 years of age.

Although young, these two drivers have been competing for an accumulated period of 15 years plus, many of which were in international standard events both locally and internationally.

The Driver’s Profiles

Name : Aaron Lim Say Joon

Age : 16 yrs

Chassis/Engine/Tyre Entry at Oceania 2001: Gillard / Parilla / Bridgestone

Karting Highlights :

  • Karted since 7 years old
  • National Formula Junior Champion 1999
  • Competed in Oceania 2000 Championships
  • Finished 2nd in Formula 100 class, KBS Ford Malaysia 2000 Championships
  • Competed in Asia Zone – China Championships, Beijing 2001

Name : Nik Iruwan Nik Izani

Age : 16 yrs

Chassis/Engine/Tyre Entry at Oceania 2001: Gillard / Parilla / Bridgestone

Karting Highlights :

  • Karted since 10 years old
  • 2nd in National Formula Junior 1999
  • Finished 3rd in Formula Junior class, KBS Ford Malaysia 2000 Championships
  • Represented Malaysia in the Prime Minister’s Cup Enduro 40 international event ( 1999, 2000, 2001 )

Aaron coincidentally also competed at the Oceania Championships in 2000, hence has the upperhand in track familiarity and setup knowledge over Nik Iruwan. Both will be well supported by an experienced team, consisting of some of the most experienced drivers and tuners in Malaysia.

Team Management

Heading the Team in the Management area is Mr. Ng Wai Leong – Malaysia’s National Kart Champion for a few years and the reign 2000 Formula Asia Champion. Wai Leong competed in the Oceania Championship 2000 and finished a respectable 10th. His role this year will be on team management; something the young drivers will surely appreciate and value.

Wai Leong runs City Karting Enterprise, a professional kart shop and also a track in the city of Shah Alam whenever he is not competing in karts. His company maintains a web site on www.citykarting.com , which details out its business operations.

Technical

In the Technical area, Mr. Richard Lim of RL Racing is responsible for the 2 man strong team of technicians present at this year’s assault at Raleigh. He has very extensive karting experience, both as a driver and kart engine tuner. Richard is a very much hands-on tuner and commands much respect from drivers and the competition alike, for his experience and influence in the sport.

Although Richard is no longer competing himself, he keeps fit by driving his stable of karts such his SA250 four stroke kart ( perhaps the only one in South East Asia ) and also a 125 FC ICC spec kart. Richard’s racing’s interest is now centered on his son, Aaron – a potent combination when it comes to kart racing in Malaysia.

The Team’s Aim in 2001

Having competed in last year’s event, the team is hopeful for a more fruitful assault in 2001. Last year’s bid was clouded by insufficient track knowledge and setup time, which created some technical difficulties for our 2000 drivers. ( Wai Leong, Aaron & Arif Nor Salamon ) The colder conditions also took some of our drivers by surprise – as Malaysia is a very much tropical country like Australia northern states.

This year, equipped with better preparation and also past on-track setup knowledge, targets a top 10 finish for both drivers.

"This is still a tall order especially when the world’s top drivers will be there like David Fore, who is the 2000 FSA World Champion. He is expected to be there, driving in the official factory Tonykart team. We also cannot discount the top Australian drivers like Ian Salvestrin, Josh Hunt, Robert Holden & Colin Cockery. We will however give them a run for their money!" said Wai Leong, the team manager.

Whatever the achievement, karting in Malaysia will have ALL to gain from the overseas exposure of such young talents like Aaron and Nik Iruwan. They will be the nation’s next generation of drivers and their karting exposure at the international level will surely bring the sport’s standard and professionalism to a higher echelon.

We wish the Malaysian Contingent, "All the best and make Malaysia proud!!"
