Pre-Event Press Releases
PRESS RELEASE : 17th May 2001
KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix Rd. 2

With the confirmed attendance of our honourable Minister of Youth & Sport; Dato' Hishammuddin Tun Hussein during our the weekend’s KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix at Sepang, things are indeed looking very promising for the sport of karting in Malaysia.

Through the ministry’s effort, the government of Malaysia is heavily promoting motorsports and karting in particular through their direct involvement with our Kart Prix Championship as a joint Title Sponsor. The ministry, with current leadership of Dato’ Hishammuddin, has supported the series continually since 1999, much to the benefit of many karters locally.

Ian Salvestrin of Australia - Formula 100

With the continued support of local industries like Ford Malaysia; the series has taken on a international status where many foreign entries are expected at every round.

For the coming round in Sepang during this weekend ( May 19 & 20), a total of 93 drivers are already confirmed.

As seen in previous events, the number will normally increase in the last few days before the event – hence no. of entries exceeding 100 is still a possibility.

The highlight of the class of drivers in this round must surely be on the Australian team who are well known in the international karting arena., as seen from their participation in last year’s Oceania Kart Championship 2000 in Coffs Harbour, Australia. One of the drivers in the team is featured below.

Driver : Ian Salvestrin
Tony Kart - Parilla / Vega

"I am very excited about competing at Sepang on May 20. Sepang is now a world famous circuit becuase of the F1 Grand Prix and it is great to be competing in Malaysia for the first time. With Malaysia becoming more of a recognised nation in the world of motor racing it is great to compete in the KBS Ford Malaysian Kart Prix Series which is getting stronger all the time.

Hopefully my participation will encourage more Australian drivers in the future and also encourage Malaysian drivers to compete in Australia."

"We have currently quite a few entries from Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia and of course Singapore in this round, surely giving the local drivers a taste of what international karting is all about" said Ann Siew; City Karting’s Marketing Executive.

The kart track at Sepang is also well known internationally as it’s bigger variant is the host to the Formula 1 circus every year. Not known to many outsiders is the fact that the kart track is also a 75% replica of the main circuit and equally as challenging to drive.

"It is a very technical circuit and a very good set-up is definitely required to ensure a possibility of winning here." said local star driver Ng Wai Leong who will also compete in the Formula 100 class.

Five classes will competed as per previous rounds namely Formula 100, Formula Junior, Formula P, Formula Cadet and finally the newly introduced class of Formula 125. Each class have their own set of specifications and regulations, which can be viewed at Citykarting’s website on www.citykarting.com

The races are held over a two day period and the finals on Sunday afternoon, when our VIPS are expected to witness the grand finale for all classes. The AAM sanctioned event is organised by both Kelab Kart Selangor and City Karting, who had managed all previous rounds successfully.

To further promote the sport to everyone, entrance & parking is free to all spectators for all the events. You are even allowed to visit the paddocks and view how the machines are being prepared before the races!

So what are you doing this weekend? Come and feel the excitement of kart racing at Sepang!

1st May 2001 PRESS RELEASE : FORD SUPPORTS YOUNG MALAYSIANS FOR FORMULA ONE THROUGH GO-KART SPONSORSHIP

Shah Alam, Friday, March 2, 2001 - - Ford is continuing its support in preparing young Malaysians for Formula One racing through its sponsorship of the premier local go-karting competition, the KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix championship. Having been a key sponsor over the last two years, Ford believes that support on such grass root event will go a long way in realising the country’s hope to see a driver sitting in the Formula One grid.

"It is widely known that most racing drivers got their start in go-karting before moving up to the ultimate level of racing, which is the Formula One" said TH Chong, Marketing Manager of Ford Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
"Having established Malaysia as an important venue on the Formula One calendar, it is now very important that we start to nurture the local talent".

Mr Chong said that Ford understood the need to develop potential drivers because of its long association with motorsports. "With 174 Grand Prix victories, 13 Drivers' World Championships and 10 Constructors' World Championships, Ford has a record unequalled by any other engine manufacturer," he said. " This year is especially significant as it marks Ford’s 100 year in motorsports".

The KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix would provide local go-kart drivers with invaluable exposure as they would be competing with overseas participants such as Germany, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

"Being the best in Malaysia is not enough, " he said. "We need to strive to be world-class and it is hoped that such competition will help create top-rated drivers of the future".

Ford Malaysia is a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Tractors Malaysia Berhad. Its product range includes the Ranger 4x4, Focus, Lynx, Escape, Econovan, Spectron, Trader and Transit.

18th April 2001 : KBS Ford Malaysia Round 2, 2001

Once again, the Kementerian Belia & Sukan (KBS) / Ford Malaysia Kart Prix Series comes to the internationally acclaimed Sepang Go-Kart Circuit this 19th & 20th May.

The circuit in Sepang, which will host the 2nd round of the international status KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix championship, is a favourite track amongst most drivers; both local and international alike. The circuit, being very technical in nature, challenges even the best of drivers.

We anticipate the participation of 100 karters in this round, consisting of both local and international drivers. The championship has proved popular amongst karters from the region in the last few rounds and yet again, we will see our local drivers giving our foreign contingent a fight worth their money. Drivers from Singapore will feature strongly again, together with those from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Indonesia, Brunei and Australia.

Judging from last year’s race at Sepang and also the recent events held at Sepang, Indonesian drivers have been most successful at this track – thanks to perhaps a better setup & strategy on the race day. Nevertheless, many local ace drivers like Ng Wai Leong & Aaron Lim are out to demolish that dominance in the Round 2 races. We will definitely see some exciting races & action in all classes.

Racing will be held over two days, with the climax reaching on Sunday afternoon as the finals of each category will be held then.

Thanks to also the introduction of the new Formula 125 kart class, the numbers of drivers has again shot up for this year’s event, a boost in helping the nation source our Formula 1 drivers. This class is also well received by the more senior drivers as it is a self-starting kart, thanks to an on-board electric starter and higher weight limit – making it equally competitive to heavier drivers.

Kart racing is booming in Malaysia, thanks to the continued effort of the government and private companies who sponsors our races. Be at our race to be part of history in making!

See the action, feel the speed and share the excitement of international kart racing!
