Pre-Event Press Releases

Post-Event Review KBS Ford Malaysia Round 4, 2001

The rain came in full force on Sunday during the weekend's  races, creating havoc but a fitting finale to the year's Piala Menteri Championship.

The rain however did not stop the domination of PDB's top driver; Lotta Hellberg who prove beyond doubt, her qualities as a top kart driver. For those who does not know her - Lotta is a Swedish lady and former European Kart Champion. She competed & even beat some of the current F1 drivers in their karting days, drivers like Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen to name a  few.

For someone who has never driven in Sepang prior to the event and wins it first time, speaks volume for Lotta's driving ability. Not to be forgotten, is also Lotta's other half, Mr Peter De Brun himself ( hence the team and chassis name PDB ) who prepares and tunes the kart/engine in Lotta's outfit. We karters in Malaysia has certainly much to learn from the top international teams like PDB, period .

In this year's Formula 100 championship, there were not much for Malaysia to cheer about as Thai's Mungkong took the main honours. Only James Veerapen saved the day with his 6th placing for the year. For the remaining classes, we had better luck  with Raja Shah Hadlee and Nigel Ng emerging champions in their 125 and Piston Port class respectively. ( both of City Karting )

In the Juniors, Singaporean Devin put up a consistent show throughout the year to be in 1st place although Abdul Hafi did put up a gallant fight in the last race to win by just 0.156 seconds over Devin. It was also another Singaporean; Oliver Pursley who took the top honours in the Cadet class with Jazeman trailing just 4 point behind.

Anyhow, the Championship has been in another success, in both terms of organisation & participation, even if we would have been more proud if more Malaysian were represented in the top placings for the year's championship. Well, that's motorsport and our local teams can only learn positively from their race performance and achievement  - and prepare better for the next's year bid!

Last of all, thanks to all the drivers, teams, officials, sponsors & media for making it yet another successful, safe and enjoyable year!

Press Release : Pre-Event KBS Ford Malaysia Round 4, 2001 ( 5th October 2001 )

The fourth and final round of Malaysia’s Premier karting event; the KBS Ford Malaysia will be held on the 27th & 28th October weekend at the Sepang International Go-Kart Circuit.

The championship started in March at Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit. The championship then continued to Sepang and back to Shah Alam for the 2nd and 3rd league respectively and now, concludes with a grand finale at the Sepang track – which rates as the nation’s best karting facility.

The Ministry of Sport and Youth ( KBS ) and Ford Malaysia , both co-title sponsors for the championship again expect fast and furious kart action on the track – bringing the best kart drivers from around the world and also Malaysia to our shores.

For this round, a strong contingent from Australia is expected to compete in the top class Formula 100 this time. A brief summary of the "Aussie" drivers in their contingent expected at Sepang are:
Richard McLeod - Currently racing FA in the CIK Australia series. He will be backed by the Azzurro Team here in Malaysia. Azzurro is a company producing karts in Australia.
Colin Corkery - Currently racing ICA in the CIK Australia series. Finished 4th in the Round 2 of the KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix Championship. Colin actually hails from Auckland, New Zealand.

Barclay Holden - Currently racing in FA in the CIK Australia series. Finished 2nd in the Ocenia Championships last year and finished 5th in the Asia Pacific Championship in Japan last year.
The Championship table for the Formula 100 class is lead by Thai’s Mungkong Sathienthirakul, with a massive 20 points, after his two victories in the Rd 2 and Rd 3. His dominance in Sepang during the Rd 2 could perhaps be a hint for the outcome of Rd 4. However racing is never predictable!

A distant 2nd place in the Championship, is held by Mohd Jeffrey Abdullah Suresh of Singapore. He was the winner in the Rd 1, but did not fare too well in the Rd 2. He holds currently 10 points. Sharing 2nd place as well is Arya Setyaki and Singaporean Kenny Yip is 3rd outright.

Our first Malaysian driver is youngster James Veerapen , at joint 5th placing and 4 points.

" I will try my best to give the Malaysian home crowd something to cheer about " said our young Veerapen. He was doing well in the last race at Sepang until his machinery failed, hence do expect some surprises from this young man this time.

5 separate classes will be raced as per earlier round namely; Formula 100, 125, Piston Port, Junior and the Cadets. Each class has their own points table in the championship which is downloadable here. ( Piala Menteri Points Table - Excel format ).

The track at Sepang is definitely a favourite amongst the foreign drivers as seen from the earlier races and previous race. The track is challenging, which replicates 75% of its more well known sibling – the world class F1 circuit of Sepang.

"We expect again drivers from Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Not to forget our Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia team drivers who leads the points table in the F100 class. We even had an inquiry from a driver based in Khazakstan earlier, so the event’s reputation is indeed growing internationally" said Ann Siew of City Karting Promotion.

Want to get to know our next batch of Formula 1 drivers? Come to Sepang and meet them! See for yourself the excitement of kart racing – entrance is free, so what are you waiting for? See Formula 1 for free!

See you trackside!

KBS Ford Malaysia Kart Prix Rd 4 News!

We have the confirmation from the organisers that the Round 4 for the KBS Ford Malaysia is now confirmed to be at the Sepang International Go-Kart Cicuit at end of October. ( 27th & 28th )

Other good news is that our event is getting world wide attention - this is proven by the tentative driver entries from Khazakstan; a former Russian state, for the Round 4 event. More entries from Taiwan and Macau are expected again - Sepang seems to be a favourite venue for them.
